Abigail Ruane, Women, Peace and Security Programme Director, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)is the longest-standing women’s peace organisation in the world. Abigail is a recognized women’s human rights expert with policy, academic, and organizing experience.  Building on her work with WILPF’s grassroots feminist peace movement, Abigail successfully led advocacy for the 2015 Global Study on Women, Peace and Security to include priority recommendations on demilitarisation and strengthening participation of women’s civil society. Following this, she has worked with the NGO Working Group on Women Peace and Security to increase civil society briefers to the Security Council and to address root causes of violence from sexual violence to sustaining peace. Abigail is also the Global Organising Partner for the Women’s Major Group on Sustainable Development, where she leads WILPF’s work for a conflict prevention approach to development that promotes gender equality and peace. She represents WILPF on the Civil Society Advisory Board of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Abigail holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Southern California (USC) and a B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University.
